Kinkos loves me

The Kinkos man and my husband are fast becoming good friends. Every time I need a large amount of copies of my work done up, I send him in there.

Yesterday, we ran off two copies of my WIP. One I will use to do my edits from. The other one I sent to a good friend to read. (let's not even talk about the anxiety there)

This method of printing off everything I write and doing a review that way seems to work great for me. It amazes me what mistakes I can find when I see it that way. Even spacing errors shows up better. Besides, I can carry it everywhere with me so much easier.

What are some tried and true methods you use when you edit? I would love to know--but hopefully it won't mean ousting my Kinko man.

I print everything out and edit the paper copy. I catch many more mistakes that way. My daughter cringes because of the amount of paper I go through, but there's always recycling, right?

I do the same thing - always have the hard copy to use for my initial run-through editing. I used to always use a pencil only instead of a pen, but I've relaxed that somewhat over the years.

Yep. I always print mine up. Not only do I see typos better, but it feels like I read it as a reader rather than as the writer, so I catch weird sentences or things that don't flow right.
Congrats on being to that point! Woohoo! :-)

I can only work with printed MS when Im editing. I just like to be able to scribble stuff in the margins when I get an idea while I read. Im still a rookie, but so far that's my method.

Hi Terri -

I do most of my editing right on the computer. All the paper, ink, and transferring my notes into the computer strike me as expensive and double the work.

With this edit done, I am planning to print out a hard copy of the manuscript. I'm always a bit leery of hard drive crashes even though I have back-up disks.

BTW, do you think it's less expensive to have Kinko's run off the copies instead of printing them out? Or is it a time-saving thing?

Blessings,
Susan :)

never heard of kinko but I do print everything out too. I also have this amazing friend who reads my stuff and I read hers. Because of this, the trust between us has really grown.

Hi there Terri,

I do the exact same thing...I ALWAYS print out my writing. A close friend who is a writer taught me that it's much easier to spot errors that way, and I've stuck with it. It's just amazing what jumps out at you on paper, isn't it?

I like this method, too, when I'm ready for what I hope are last edits. But I've just printed it out at home, myself. I wonder if it saves money to go to Kinkos? It would certainly be easier.

I also print copy. It's easier to see editing errors.

I, too like to have a copy in hand to work with. I also "read it out loud."
Blessings and prayers, andrea

PS: urgent prayer request on my blogs for a fellow blogger.

i print mine out as a pdf file and not a doc file so that the formatting doesn't change. you have to have a paper copy and I use UPS...lots of work but editing is like wrapping the present-the final touch to your writing project.

I don't have any advice for you here, but I just wanted to say that I love your commitment and your tenacity! I expect to see great things from you soon (no pressure...just keep doing what you're doing)!

Hmm. That could be more cost effective than actually printing out a copy of my works. My noveling blog, Uninvoked, has had so many revisions already that I don't think looking at it on a monitor will help anymore. At least the posts visible to the public aren't as embarrassing as they were.

Thanks for the tip. ^^

Gotta read from a hard copy too. It's like reading your poetry out loud. You pick up the "off" stuff better using different methods.

I print out my work too but my favorite method is the TextAloud program that reads my drafts. I sit back and listen with my eyes closed. Typos, spelling and grammatical errors make me jump and I edit right there in TextAloud.

The program voices must get tired of going through the same material over and over again.
