A few years ago, we received a late night phone call. You know the kind. The ones that change our lives forever. My husband’s brother had been killed in a freak accident.

One phone call. One life-changing call.

When I was twenty-one, I waited two weeks for a call. My future husband finally called me and invited me out on our first date. Three months later, he asked me to marry him. My life changed because he dialed my number.

One phone call—one life-changing phone call.

I’d tried to get pregnant for two years. Finally, I gave up and bought a dog. Two months later the phone rang. “You’re pregnant, Mrs. Tiffany.”

Another call eight years ago. “We’d like to hire you.” My husband looked at me and laughed. Two weeks later, he was packed and on his way to Florida to start his new career. I waited three more months for the call telling me our home sold.

Life-changing phone calls.

How many times have you received a call that changed your life forever? Maybe it was a person offering you a job, maybe it was a doctor’s office with bad news, and maybe it was a teacher telling you that your child was failing in school. Maybe it was a call from that coveted agent or publishing house.

It takes one call to change a person’s life forever. When was the last time you picked up the phone and made a difference?

I don't think anything I write could give justice to your post--very powerful and moving. Thanks Terri.

Early spring 1993...I still remember so vividly hanging up the phone in disbelief...the biopsy results are in and you have cancer. It changed my life in a profound way. In the midst of the dark turmoil I knew that God was there for me but it was not until many years later that I was able to look upon that very scary time and see it as a real blessing in my life.I came to understand the meaning of God's unmerited favor, His Grace and His endless compassion.

Great post, we can always count on you to ask the really thought provoking questions.

Blessings
Robin

What a great reminder to "live in the moment". Changes, both good and not-so-good, come in a instant.

I've lived long enough to know that everything "comes to pass". Thus I relish the richness of life's blessings while they're evident, and I hang-tight when undergoing life's trouble.

I liked the way you layed this out. I read on and on wondering how you'd weave it together.

Hugs,
Kathleen

Whew, what a great question. This will take a lot of thought. I for the life of me can't think of a phone call like that at the moment.

Wow! You've had some life-changing calls. I've had several too. But the most recent was "the call" from the contest coordinator telling me I'd finaled. Then a few days after that, "the call" from my new agent. Those were exciting calls, unlike many of the others I've had in life.

Oh, I'm feeling for you just from reading this. May all your future 'calls' be like the pregnancy and job ones--exciting and wonderful.

Many years ago I received a call while at work about my dad having a heart attack. Praise God he came through it fine, but that call did make me pause and start to really appreciate ALL my family members more. Because you just never know...

What a poignant way to put this!
Phone calls late night used to always mean bad things in my house growing up. I still cringe if the phone rings after 9:30pm...

I have gotten a lot of meaningful calls too. It's weird, but I think I've always held onto (memory-wise) letters more, maybe b/c they are in writing and permanent. ??

Great thought,
Wendy

When I have someone on my mind, I try to call them. Often, they've needed encouragement or been an answer to one of my prayers.

Thanks, Terri, for a powerful post.

Blessings,
Susan :)

Any time I head about "that phone call" it reminds me of the time when I was minding my business one afternoon and "they" called and said my son was involved in a rollover accident. He survived and is soon to be married. Good things for him, now please God.
I try to make a difference when I keep in touch with my friends. I hope I have been faithful.

Eeek!
I don't know if I've made a difference to anyone lately. *feeling guilty*

But this is such a true post. I remember the phone call saying my little brother's mom killed herself. I remember the phone call when I finaled in my first contest.

Great post.

Thank you so much for visiting my blog. So you have experience in job loss? It is surreal at best. My life has changed unbelievably. I am waiting on the Lord to direct me to what I am supposed to do next.
I see you are a writer. I am a closet writer. I don't think I have what it takes to get published, but when I am inspired, I take to the keys and type away!
I have read quite a few of your posts. I will be visiting often.

What a great question? I had to tell my husband the last time I was pregnant over the phone because I was visiting my parents at the time. We had to tell our families about our pregnancies over the phone since we live so far away, except for that last one where I was at my parents.
I tend to block out the bad calls, but I know I've had them.

Fantastic post, Terri. A phone call can certainly change everything.

We got a chilling call on a Friday night nearly one year ago. Our 18 year old son had been in a serious car accident. He was terribly shaken but not injured...2 motorcycles hit him...neither of them wore helmets. Our church kept them alive through prayer.

I use the phone regularly to call my precious daughter in law. She's the mommy of 4 (ages 7, 4, 2 and 6 months) and is frequently alone because our son is in the military. That phone is our life-line. Well, that and airplanes. LOL

Well said! You've had more dramatic phone calls than I have, but I've had a few that I'll never forget.

You're so right we can use the phone to make a big impact by reaching out to loved ones with little acts of kindness. I think, when was the last time I called my mom or dad and told them I loved them?

Hmm, you gave me an idea...

Blessings,
Kelli

So funny, but most my news comes via email now because people know I hate the phone!

Loved this post...

People who work in the field of adoption have tough jobs working to find homes for orphans BUT one thing I think must be supremely rewarding is making referral phone calls. In the world of international adoption The Call as the referral phone call is often nicknamed is something famous every family waits for. It's the one telling adoptive parents they've been matched with their child/ren and it's a momentous occasion.

Of course our Call came when we least expected it and I had just pulled into our driveway when the cell phone rang. On the other end the voice of our adoption coordinator telling us we had a "5 month old son, (blah, blah, blah... couldn't concentrate after that) Pictures to follow in an email." We did record us catching a glimpse of our son for the first time after hanging up from The Call

Terri, I think you have found a new story for a Chicken Soup article: "The Phone Call." What would you write? Who would be in the story? Would the reader laugh or cry? I'll be you even have 2 articles in mind now!

I never could open the story you sent back to me. Can you just put it in the body of the email?
